Human Light-Meters

Which is what my art teacher wants us to become XD. So our focus has been on this project where we’re drawing in cubism, in black ‘n’ white, and shading everything all crazy like with no rules. Funny how many people seem to not know what to do with no boundries.

A lot of the better artists in the class were rendered helpless and had to ask for assistance many times. And—not that I’m one of those ‘better artists’—even I had to ask the teacher to shade a few things in to show me how its done.

But this event is big cuz I hardly ever ask for help (cuz I’m bad at talking) and he’s never helped me before (though, I don’t quite know the reason for that; he’s helped everyone at least once).

“I think…I forgot how to shade,” I said in an insecure student mumble.

He was coloring in a jewel that wasn’t supposed to be a jewel. “I think it’s more that you’re still in the learning process.”

Couldn’t argue with that. I handed him the blending stump when he beckoned for it and did the same for the eraser when he needed that, too. Then he announced he was going to shade in “that metal thing” for me.

“What’s the metal thing?” I inquired, because what he was coloring in was a foot and that wasn’t metal.

“Reflective.”

And that helped me realize what the point of the assignment was. It wasn’t to totally copy what was in front of us. It was to force us to play with value. The entire class period, I had constantly overheard him preaching to the other students, “No, that’s not an object; that’s a shape.” And then, I knew what he meant.

“We’re going back to realism next week,” he told me and then smiled. “Just have fun with this.”

Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because I was working on my cubism drawing today. Though, in all actuality, I was staring at it while fiddling around with my clay eraser. I’m such a procrastinator….

My art teacher says that you’ll always find excuses not to draw.

If I wanna be a mangaka…well, you all know what I have to do.
